The Little Mermaid 2023 Live Adaptation: Everything You Need To Know
Listen up, Disney fans! Walt’s movie-making machine has been busy cranking out live-action remakes of classic animated films faster than you can say "Hakuna Matata!" From The Jungle Book to Beauty and the Beast, the films have been igniting and reigniting passion for these great stories in the hearts of many. And now, the newest addition to this list is The Little Mermaid, set to hit theatres in 2023. In this article, we'll dive into all the juicy details about this upcoming live-action adaptation.
The Story of The Little Mermaid
It's a tale as old as time, well, at least since Hans Christian Andersen wrote it in 1837. In case you haven't read it, here's a brief summary:
The Original
The story follows a young mermaid named Ariel who falls in love with a human prince. She visits a sea witch to trade her voice for legs so she can go to the surface and win the prince's heart. However, the witch warns her that every step she takes will feel like she's walking on sharp knives, and if she fails to make the prince fall in love with her, she will die and turn into sea foam. Yikes!
The Classic
Now, let's fast forward to 1989 when Disney decided to put their own spin on the story. In the Disney version, Ariel is a spunky, redheaded mermaid who longs to be part of the human world. She makes a deal with Ursula, the sea witch, to trade her voice for legs so she can pursue her dream of being with Prince Eric. Along the way, she befriends a colourful cast of characters, including a flounder and a crab, and has to defeat Ursula to save both the human and underwater worlds.
There were a few changes made in the Disney adaptation to make it more family friendly. For example, that whole turning into sea foam thing – that’s out. In the Disney version, she just loses her chance to become human and has to go back to the sea. And of course, one of the most delightful additions to the tale is that memorable soundtrack - "Under the Sea," anyone?
Despite the changes, The Little Mermaid has remained an important part of pop culture. The Disney version has inspired countless merchandise, theme park attractions, and even a Broadway musical. And now, with the upcoming live-action adaptation, it's clear that this story will continue to capture the hearts of audiences for generations to come.
The Music and Soundtrack
It's no new notion that music plays a huge role in making any film, and The Little Mermaid is no exception. In fact, the music in this movie is so iconic that it's hard to imagine the film without it.
The Soundtrack to Countless Youths
The original soundtrack, composed by the legendary Alan Menken and featuring lyrics by Howard Ashman, was a smash hit. Songs like "Part of Your World" and "Under the Sea" have become classics and are still sung by Disney fans of all ages. And who could forget the villainous "Poor Unfortunate Souls"? Ursula really brought the drama with that one!
The New Music
Now, for the live adaptation, there will be new music and songs added to the mix. It's always a risk to add new songs to a beloved classic, but the creative team behind the film seems up to the challenge. According to reports, Lin-Manuel Miranda, the mastermind behind "Hamilton," is collaborating on the new songs. If anyone can pull off adding new music to a classic, it's Lin-Manuel.
Of course, there will still be some of the original songs, which have been reimagined for the live adaptation. We can't wait to hear what new twists they'll put on "Part of Your World" or "Kiss the Girl."
The Setting and Visuals
The original movie took us on a magical underwater journey, and we're excited to see how the live adaptation will bring this world to life.
Locations
According to reports, the film will be shot on location in Italy and also use some studio work for the underwater scenes. We're already imagining the stunning Italian coastline and crystal-clear waters serving as the perfect backdrop for Ariel's adventures.
CGI
Of course, one of the biggest challenges in bringing The Little Mermaid to life is creating convincing underwater scenes. We can't wait to see the combination of practical effects and CGI that the filmmakers will use to make the underwater world come alive. Will they use motion capture or practical costumes for the mermaids? How will they create the illusion of underwater movement and lighting? These are questions that we're eager to have answered.
The original film was known for its stunning animation, and we're curious to see how the live adaptation will translate that into live action. With advancements in visual effects, we're expecting some truly breath-taking visuals that will transport us to a whole new world.
