Movie Trailers That Could Make or Break a Film

Good movie trailers can make you count down the days until a film is released. They can create that absolute must-see feeling of anticipation for a film that audiences can’t forget about. But what happens when the movie does not live up to the trailer?

How do you make a movie trailer interesting?

As we’ve said before, the making of a trailer is almost as intricate and important as making the movie itself, after all it is a business in itself. Any movie buff will tell you that it’s important to make a movie trailer interesting but never better than the film. Reality should exceed expectation when it comes to a film, but sometimes the opposite is true.

There are a few ways in which a trailer can create a ruined film.

False advertising

This is when a trailer makes you think the movie is about something completely different than it really is. If done well, this can actually be quite entertaining and a surprise, when done badly it can just be highly annoying.

Spoiler Alert

When a trailer gives away key plot twists it’s considered a trailer with spoilers. The problem with these kinds of trailers is that they take away all the mystery that a film has to offer. You wouldn’t want to see a movie if you already know what’s going to happen, right?

All or Nothing

When the trailer shows absolutely every good scene in the film, all within two minutes, leaving nothing left for the film to deliver on. Trailers that ruined the movie like this, are often criticised because they made audiences so enthralled to see the film which, in the end, ultimately disappointed them.

What makes a successful trailer?

In our previous blog, Great Movie Trailers That Launched a Hit Film (add in link to blog here) we discussed the recipe for a great trailer and what it should consist of. Here’s what we said:

  • Some witty, punchy conversation
  • A brilliant, emotive moment or performance
  • Beautiful imagery or scenery
  • Or a combination of it all

Successful movie trailers combine these points (one or more of them) into a two-minute taster of what to expect from the film but should never give away the plot or completely out-shine the film itself.
