Once Upon A Time In Hollywood director, Quentin Tarantino is no stranger to controversy. Discover the top three issues that critics had with his film.
1. The controversial portrayal of Bruce Lee
This is perhaps the most controversial part of this film with the late Bruce Lee’s daughter, Shannon Lee, being very vocal about it. In the movie, Bruce Lee (played by Mike Moh) is portrayed as arrogant and almost loses a fight to Cliff Booth (played by Brad Pitt). Critics argue that it disrespects the legacy of one of the few iconic Asian American stars.
2. Violence against women
Violence is a usual part of Tarantino films but violence against women in films has become more and more contentious, especially in the age of #MeToo.
Although, it’s also true that filmmakers don’t owe us movies that depict an ideal or even a high moral standard. There is also no guarantee that removing violence against women in film will reduce it in real life.
3. It rewrites history
The film is set in the time of the Manson murders and much like his previous films, Inglourious Basterds and Django Unchained, Once Upon A Time In Hollywood reimagines the outcome of a notorious period.
The controversy is clearly Tarantino’s middle name but that has in no way hindered him from garnering awards. Once Upon A Time in Hollywood won an Oscar ® for Best Production Design and Brad Pitt won the Oscar ® for Best Supporting Actor at the 92nd Academy Awards ®.
