Who doesn’t love a sequel? Eddie Murphy is back with a bang searching for a long-lost heir in Coming 2America. Having married his American sweetheart, Eddie Murphy returns to Queens as King of Zamunda in search of the male heir to inherit his title. He tracks down his long-lost son, bringing him to Zamunda to succeed him to the throne. While the cast has remained the same thirty years later including Arsenio Hall, Shari Headley, Wesley Snipes and James Earl Jones, we do see some new faces. One of which is the South African actress and United Nations Goodwill Ambassador - Nomzamo Mbatha.
The businesswoman and human activist, known for her roles in popular local television shows Isibaya and Umlilo, and has starred in Tell Me Sweet Somethingalongside Maps Maponyane and Thishiwe Ziqubu. Mbatha was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role for the Africa Movie Academy Award and was included in Essence Magazine’s global ’20 Young Black Hollywood stars to watch’ list. Her international debut is one any South African or avid soap opera watcher should not miss.
The comedy features other actors of African descent like Michael Blackson (born in Ghana) and Nigerian born Rotimi. The film’s African elements don’t end with the cast as the soundtrack also features African artists such as Tiwa Savage, Nasty C and Prince Kaybee to name a few. We catch a glimpse of the beautiful and diverse African clothing styles by local designer Laduma Ngxokolo of MaXhosa Africa was approached by Ruth E. Carter, Coming 2 America’s costume designer who won an Oscar for her work on Black Panther. The film also features garments from another well-known South African designer, Palesa Mokubung of Mantsho. We see Nomzamo and her international cast members bringing these garments to life.
The cast includes Jermaine Fowler, Teyana Taylor, Leslie Jones and Tracy Morgan. With an incredible cast, beautifully made outfits, an iconic comedic tale revisited - we can’t wait to see the King of Zamunda having us in stitches again.
