Celebrated war film, 1917 won three Oscars ® including Best Sound Mixing, Best Cinematography and Best Visual Affects. The visual awards have largely been attributed to the single-shot style of shooting that was typical of Roma (winner of Best Cinematography in 2017), La La Land (2016), The Revenant (2015), Birdman (2014) and Gravity (2013).
According to 1917 VFX supervisor, Guillaume Rocheron, the main task in the film was maintaining the illusion that the story had been captured in one continuous shot. The lack of cuts enabled viewers to process the images for longer than in most movies, making it more immersive but also prone to closer scrutiny. So, the VFX team had to pay meticulous attention to detail to execute it perfectly.
