Ten facts about Oscar winner Parasite

The breakout hit, Parasite, took home four accolades including Best Original Screenplay, Best Director, Best Picture and Best International Feature Film. Read on to discover some awesome facts about this award-winning film.

1. Parasite is the first South Korean film in history to win an Oscar in any category

Parasite’s first win for the night was for Best Original Screenplay.

2. Parasite is the first foreign language film to win Best Picture

Many worthy films were nominated before it, but Parasite was the first to break the barrier. Previous foreign language films that were nominated in this category include Roma (2018) and Amour (2012), with Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon being the last Asian Best Picture nominee before ‘Parasite’

3. Parasite is the fifth foreign language film to win Best Original Screenplay

The last foreign language film to win was Talk to Her in 2002, won by Pedro Almodóvar.

4. It had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival where it won the Palme d'Or award

It was also the first Korean film to do so.

5. The script was originally written as a play

After numerous revisions, writer Han Jin Won helped the director turn into a screenplay.

6. The movie holds a 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes

7. Part of the film was inspired by the director, Bong Joon Ho’s experience of being a maths tutor in a rich family’s home

Apparently, he was recommended by his girlfriend (now wife) even though he was really bad at maths!

8. Reports suggest that Parasite will be turned into an HBO series

Allegedly, the series will also be called Parasite and focus on similar themes of inequality and the class divide.

9. So far, Parasite has grossed around 30 million dollars

10. Bong Joon Ho also wrote a song!

Parasite features an original song, “Soju One Glass” written by director Bong Joon Ho and sung by star Choi Woo-shik.
