IMAX takes moviegoing to the next level with mind-blowing visuals, crystal-clear sound, and an experience so immersive, it goes beyond the edge of your seat. Every element—from the specially designed theatres to cutting-edge projection and audio technology—is built to pull you deeper into the story.
That’s why the world’s biggest filmmakers choose IMAX to bring their blockbusters to life. Whether it’s action, adventure, or awe-inspiring moments, there’s nothing quite like seeing it in IMAX.
IMAX is a premium cinema format that combines a specially designed theatre, high-resolution projection and a custom sound system to create the most immersive way to watch a movie. The name IMAX comes from "Image Maximum", which sums up the idea: a picture so large and clear that it fills your field of view.
What makes an IMAX cinema different from a regular theatre isn't one single feature but how everything works together. The screen is larger and positioned closer to the audience, the theatre's seating is laid out so every seat has an immersive view, and the sound system is calibrated to the room so you hear every detail, from a whisper to an explosion. Many blockbusters are also digitally remastered for IMAX, and selected films are shot with IMAX cameras, showing more of the picture than you'll see in any other format.

IMAX stands for "Image Maximum". It's a cinema format designed to deliver the largest, clearest picture and most immersive sound possible.
For big-screen blockbusters, action films, and anything shot with IMAX cameras, IMAX offers a noticeably bigger, sharper, and louder experience than a standard cinema. It's the closest you'll get to being inside the movie.
IMAX and Cine Prestige are both premium cinema types, but they focus on different things. IMAX is all about the picture and sound: a giant screen, sharp, bright images and powerful audio designed to make big blockbusters as immersive as possible. Cine Prestige is all about comfort and atmosphere: a luxury cinema experience with premium seating and a refined setting that turns movie night into a special occasion.
IMAX tickets are charged at a standard price, so you'll pay the same no matter which IMAX cinema, day or film you choose. You'll see the ticket price when you book online. There are also several ways to save, including Discovery Vitality discounts and Half Price Tuesday for Ster-Kinekor SK Club members.
IMAX screens the biggest blockbusters of the year, from action and superhero films to sci-fi epics and animated adventures. Many are digitally remastered for IMAX, and selected films are shot with IMAX cameras for an even more immersive experience. See which IMAX movies are showing now, or compare all our cinema types.
Ster-Kinekor has nine IMAX cinemas: five in Gauteng, three in the Western Cape and one in the Eastern Cape (Baywest, Gqeberha).
