OVERVIEW

Salt of the Earth Shorts Block brings together four films rooted in land, labour, and the fragile ecologies that sustain life. In Taste of the Land (Dir. Nondumiso Masache), indigenous foodways and urban farming practices reconnect memory, culture, and ecological care in Johannesburg. VET vannie Land (Dirs. Danielle McDonald & Konrad Helgard Raubenheimer) follows efforts to protect endangered succulents in the Richtersveld, exposing the global networks of ecological extraction and survival. A Place called Paradise (Dirs. Rae Human & Rudi Lippert) traces a couple’s return to rural life in Suurbraak, where land, community, and healing reshape their sense of home. VOICES FROM THE ABYSS (Dirs. Irving Serrano & Victor Rejón) captures the ritual of cliff divers in Acapulco, where risk, tradition, and faith converge at the edge of the sea. Together, these films reflect on land as both sustainer and witness—holding labour, memory, and meaning across shifting landscapes. (10PG)
