Every parent wants to protect their child. But what happens when the greatest threat isn’t the world outside, it’s the anger you carry within?
In The Heart Is a Muscle, a single, impulsive act sets off a reckoning that reverberates through family, community and self. South Africa’s Oscar submission is a taut, emotionally layered crime drama written, co-produced and directed by Imran Hamdulay in his debut feature. Set in Cape Town’s Cape Flats, the film explores how a man shaped by violence attempts to break the cycle - and at what cost.
The film premiered internationally in the Panorama section of the 75th Berlin International Film Festival on 17 February 2025, following a remarkable festival run that also included the 72nd Sydney Film Festival. Its United States premiere is set for February 2026 at the 41st Santa Barbara International Film Festival. Along the way, it was selected as South Africa’s official submission for Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards, underscoring its significance as a milestone for local cinema and storytelling.
This recognition highlights not only the film’s universal resonance but also the growing strength of South African cinema on the global stage.
The narrative follows Ryan (Keenan Arrison) and his wife Laila (Melissa De Vries) as they raise their young son, Jude (Troy Paulse), with love and care. During Jude’s fifth birthday, a sudden disappearance sends Ryan into a desperate search, mistakenly believing his son has been taken into a gang-controlled area. Acting on impulse, he assaults a man suspected of involvement, only to discover that Jude was hiding at home playing a prank all along. This incident forces Ryan to confront his own history of violence, initiating a journey toward self-reflection, healing, and personal redemption.
The film thoughtfully explores themes of trans-generational trauma, masculinity, and the moral complexity of human behaviour, weaving suspense and emotional resonance into a deeply human story.
